What is obesity?Causes and prevention of obesity

At the individual level, excess caloric intake, but not enough physical activity, is identified as a major cause of obesity. On the other hand, cheap and palatable food at the social level, increasing dependence on cars and widespread use of production machinery are considered to be the reasons for the increase in obesity. However, the factors that medical scientists attribute specifically to obesity are mentioned below.

1. Genetic: A bunch of genes play a role in successful metabolism and fat storage and distribution in the body. Children of obese parents are obese in about 80% of cases. Low metabolic rate and genetic susceptibility lead to obesity.

2. Family Lifestyle: The prevalence of obesity depends a lot on the lifestyle of the family. Eating habits run in families. Eating fatty fast food (burgers, pizza etc.), not eating fruits, vegetables and unrefined carbohydrates (red rice), drinking alcoholic beverages; Eating appetizers before eating in expensive restaurants and desserts with fat and sugar after eating.

3. Emotions: Depression, hopelessness, anger, boredom, feelings of inferiority, etc. can lead to obesity due to persistent overeating.

4. Workplace: In the case of employees, sitting and working and eating fast food or such food under the pressure of colleagues. After work, return home by car instead of walking or cycling.

5. Trauma: Traumatic events, such as childhood physical or emotional abuse; the pain of losing a parent; Or marital or family problems etc. trigger overeating.

6. Rest: Obesity occurs due to lack of physical activity during rest time sitting at home only watching remote controlled TV, browsing the internet or playing computer games.

7. Gender Differences: On average, men have more muscles than women. Because muscle uses more calories than other tissues (even at rest), men use more calories than women. For this reason, even if men and women eat the same amount, there is a greater risk of fat accumulation in women's bodies.

8. Pregnancy: Most women gain 4-6 pounds with each pregnancy. 9. Insomnia: If you sleep less than 6 hours at night, hormonal changes occur in the body, resulting in increased appetite

Consuming too much food causes obesity.

10. Lack of Education: Lack of awareness about good health, lack of knowledge about balanced diet, harmful effects of obesity

Obesity occurs due to ignorance etc. 11. Disease: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) can cause obesity in women. In addition, Cushing's syndrome, hypothyroidism, and obesity may be.

12. Certain medications: Certain medications can increase the risk of obesity, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants, birth control pills, etc. Moreover, insulin and some anti-diabetic drugs also cause obesity.

Health Problem of Obesity

1. Average human life expectancy is reduced by 6-7 years due to obesity.

2. Obesity causes high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high triglyceride levels.

3. As body fat increases, insulin response decreases. As a result, the amount of sugar in the blood becomes uncontrolled.

4. 64% of men and 77% of women are likely to develop diabetes due to excess fat.

5. People are affected by various diseases due to obesity. Especially heart disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, complications in pregnancy, menstrual disorders, infertility, various types of cancer, osteoarthritis, type-2 diabetes, respiratory disorders etc. A new branch of medicine has emerged to treat obesity. It is called Bariatrics.

This branch of science deals with the causes, prevention, treatment and surgery of obesity.

Prevention of Obesity

Whether one is at risk of obesity or not, everyone should be aware of this. To prevent obesity, the below-mentioned behavior-oriented issues should be taken seriously, observed and followed.

11. Use of GI hormones: Recent studies have shown that certain gastro-intestinal (GI) hormones act as a magic bullet for rapid weight loss.

12. Bariatric surgery: If obesity is not reduced by dietary changes, exercise or medicine, if necessary, laparoscopy, gastric bypass surgery, gastric sleeve, etc. Bariatric surgery can be used to get rid of obesity.
